A Room-by-Room Guide for London and Essex Homeowners

It is a question we are asked at almost every pre-installation survey: how long is this going to take? The honest answer is that it depends - but that is not very useful when you are trying to plan childcare, arrange to work from home, or work out whether you need the van for one day or two.

How Long Does Carpet Fitting Take?

Carpet fitting times are influenced by several factors: the number of rooms, the size and shape of each space, the condition of the subfloor, whether old carpet needs to be lifted first, the type of carpet chosen, and the complexity of any stairs or landings. A straightforward single bedroom takes two to three hours. A full three-bedroom house with stairs and landing will typically take one to two full working days for a professional carpet fitting team.

At Shelby Flooring we carry out carpet fitting across London and Essex every day. For a full overview of what we offer, visit our carpet fitting service page or contact us for a free survey.

What Affects How Long Carpet Fitting Takes?

  • Subfloor preparation - loose boards, uneven surfaces, or old gripper rods to remove can add 30 minutes to several hours depending on the extent of the work needed

  • Old carpet removal - allow 20 to 40 minutes per average-sized room if the fitter is lifting and removing old carpet. Removing old carpet yourself before the fitter arrives can save meaningful time on the day

  • Room shape and complexity - square or rectangular rooms are the quickest to fit. Rooms with bay windows, chimney breasts, or alcoves require additional cutting and take longer

  • Pattern matching - allow an extra 30 to 60 minutes per room for patterned carpets, depending on the complexity and scale of the pattern repeat

  • Number of rooms - a fitter working efficiently can complete approximately three to four average-sized rooms in a standard working day, including underlay, gripper rods, and fitting

  • Number of fitters - for large projects, two-person teams work significantly faster than a single fitter. Stairs and landings, for example, are much more efficient with two people

Carpet Fitting Times by Room: A Realistic Breakdown

Single bedroom carpet fitted by Shelby Flooring

Single bedroom (approximately 10 to 12 square metres)

A standard single bedroom in a typical London or Essex property takes between 2 and 3

hours for a professional fitter, including laying and taping the underlay, installing or checking gripper rods, fitting and stretching the carpet, trimming, tucking, and fitting door bars. Adding the time to remove and dispose of old carpet adds approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

Double or master bedroom (approximately 12 to 16 square metres)

A double bedroom typically takes between 2.5 and 3.5 hours. Built-in wardrobes, chimney breasts, or awkward alcoves add meaningful cutting time. A bay window in a master bedroom can add another 30 to 45 minutes to the installation.

Living room (approximately 18 to 25 square metres)

The living room is typically the most complex room to carpet in a domestic property. It is often the widest room in the house, requiring a join in the carpet if the room is wider than the roll, and usually has the most features - fireplaces, alcoves, or bay windows - requiring precise cutting. An average London living room takes between 3.5 and 5 hours. Patterned carpet in the living room adds further time for pattern matching at joins.

Hallway carpet fitted by Shelby Flooring

Hallway and landing

Hallways are deceptively time-consuming because of the number of cuts required around doorways and direction changes. A standard entrance hall, typically L-shaped or irregular, and a landing of moderate size typically takes 2 to 3 hours. A larger entrance hall in a period London property with multiple doorways can take longer.

Stairs (per standard flight)

A standard flight of 13 stairs typically takes 3 to 4 hours for a professional carpet fitting team. A waterfall installation (where the carpet folds over each nose and step in a single piece) is faster than a cap-and-band installation (where the tread and riser are fitted separately). A complete staircase with two flights and an intermediate landing can take most of a working day.

How Long Does Carpet Fitting Take for a Whole Property?

  • Studio flat or one-bedroom flat (bedroom, living room, hallway): typically completed in one working day

  • Two-bedroom flat (2 bedrooms, living room, hallway): 1 full day with an experienced team

  • Two-bedroom house (2 bedrooms, living room, hallway, stairs, landing): 1 to 1.5 days

  • Three-bedroom house (3 bedrooms, living room, hallway, stairs, landing): 1.5 to 2 days

  • Four-bedroom house or larger: 2 to 3 days depending on layout and whether stairs are included

These estimates assume rooms are fully cleared before the team arrives and that the subfloor is in good condition requiring no significant preparation. If the fitter is also lifting and disposing of old carpet, add 20 to 40 minutes per room and 30 to 60 minutes for the staircase to these estimates.

How to Prepare for Carpet Fitting Day

Preparation on the day of carpet fitting makes a genuine difference to how smoothly the installation runs and how long it takes. Here is what to do before the team arrives.

  • Clear all rooms completely of small furniture, personal belongings, and anything stored under beds or in accessible spaces

  • Remove curtains and soft furnishings from the rooms being carpeted where possible, as installation generates dust

  • If you can lift old carpet yourself in advance, do so - rolling it up and cutting it into manageable sections saves time and potentially cost on the day

  • Check that skirting boards are firmly secured before the fitting day - loose skirting boards can interfere with the gripper rod installation

  • Ensure the team has good access to all rooms, particularly in London properties with narrow hallways and stairwells where moving materials can be slow

  • For commercial carpet fitting projects, coordinate lift access, loading bay availability, and any security arrangements well in advance of the fitting day

Frequently Asked Questions About Carpet Fitting Timelines

Q: How long does it take to carpet a two-bedroom flat in London?

A: A two-bedroom flat including the hallway and living room typically takes one full working day for a professional carpet fitting team, assuming rooms are cleared and the subfloor is in good condition.

Q: Can carpet fitting be done in one day for a whole house?

A: A three-bedroom house can often be completed in one day if the property is fully prepared and the subfloor requires no significant work. However, a property with stairs, a landing, and four or more rooms will typically require two days.

Q: How can I speed up the carpet fitting process?

A: The most effective way to speed up carpet fitting is to clear all rooms completely before the fitter arrives, remove small furniture yourself, and ensure there are no access restrictions. If you can lift old carpet in advance, this saves meaningful time and potentially cost on the day.

Q: Does patterned carpet take longer to fit than plain carpet?

A: Yes, significantly. Pattern matching on a patterned carpet adds 30 to 60 minutes per room depending on the scale and complexity of the pattern repeat, as the fitter must carefully align the pattern across joins and at room boundaries. This additional time also results in higher material wastage.

Q: How long does carpet fitting take on stairs?

A: A standard flight of 13 stairs typically takes 3 to 4 hours for an experienced carpet fitting team. Adding a half-landing or turn adds further time, and a full staircase with two flights and an intermediate landing can take most of a working day.
